Bung Karno’s Exile House Ende is a place where the proclaimer of Indonesia’s independence was exiled during the occupation of the Netherland. This exile house is now visited by people as a tourist destination. This has become one of the best place to visit in Ende, East Nusa Tenggara.
Location
This exile house is located at Perwira street, Kotaraja village, Ende regency. East Nusa Tenggara Province. This house belongs to Haji Abdullah Ambuwaru. Ir. Soekarno spent 4 years and 8 months in this house.
History
On August 1st, 1933, Ir. Soekarno, Indonesia’s independence proclaimer was arrested by the Netherland Indie government. Later, on December 28th, 1933, the governor exiled him to Ende because the government saw any suspicious movement from him.
In this exile house, Ir. Soekarno met his wife, Inggit Garnasih. Here, Ir. Soekarno also got inspiration about the Indonesian foundational philosophical theory. Later, the theory was formulated into what is known as Pancasila.
After the Indonesian independence, Ir. Soekarno visited Ende for the first time in 1951. He met Haji Abdullah Ambuwaru and asked him to change the house into a museum. In 1954, Ir. Soekarno officially inaugurated it as ‘Rumah Museum.’
Rahasia Kelimutu
At the beginning of the exile period in Bung Karno’s Exile House Ende, Ir. Soekarno was depressed. But, he then woke up and found his fighting spirit. He then visited the people in Ende, greeted them, visited Kelimutu lake and arranged a theater script named ‘Rahasia Kelimutu.’
Breadfruit Tree
In this house, Ir. Soekarno contemplates the Indonesian foundational philosophical theory under a breadfruit tree. The five branches of the tree inspired him to formulate 5 points of the theory.
700 meters from this house, Ir. Soekarno also has a favorite spot to contemplate. He spent his time contemplating on a bench that was facing the sea. The breezy sea wind helps him to relax so he was able to get many inspirations.
Cultural Heritage Object
Later, the place where Ir. Soekarno contemplated becomes the Bung Karno Contemplation Park. The house was changed into a museum with Ir. Soekarno’s historical things inside. To protect this historical place, the Indonesian government issued an act about cultural heritage objects.
Until now, people visited this place to remind them of the struggle of Ir. Soekarno was the proclaimer of Indonesian independence.
